Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started with impact investing?

The best first step is building foundational knowledge: understanding what impact investing is, how it differs from other values-based approaches, and what kinds of opportunities exist across asset classes and sectors. From there, most investors benefit from connecting with peers and experts who can help translate that knowledge into action.

SVX offers free, self-paced courses like Gender Lens Investing 101, along with a full Knowledge Centre featuring market maps of impact investing products across Canada. You can connect with peers and industry experts through Impact United Academy, and explore live opportunities on the SVX Impact Index – the largest and most comprehensive directory of impact investment offerings available to Canadian accredited investors, asset owners, and portfolio managers.

What’s the difference between ESG, SRI, and impact investing?

All three approaches align investing with values, but they work differently. Environmental, social, governance (ESG) investing integrates environmental, social, and governance factors to manage risk and improve returns. Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) takes a more values-based approach, excluding companies or industries that conflict with an investor’s ethics. Impact investing goes further,  requiring intentionality, measurability, and a specific pursuit of positive social or environmental outcomes alongside financial return.

Every offering on the SVX Impact Index is expected to meet this higher bar of intentionality and measurement to actively work to create positive change.

What kind of returns can I expect from impact investing?

Impact investments can absolutely deliver competitive returns — in fact, 66% of impact investment products are targeting or achieving market-rate or above-market returns today. Return expectations do shift with market conditions, just as they do across traditional investing, but the takeaway is clear: strong financial performance and real-world impact are not mutually exclusive.

The SVX Impact Index lets you explore offerings by sector, structure, and return expectations, so you can find products that align with both your financial goals and the impact you want to make.
