Frequently Asked Questions
How can I raise capital from impact investors?
Raising impact capital typically starts with investment readiness: understanding what investors will look for, clarifying your impact thesis, and choosing the right structure for your raise (whether that’s a community bond, a fund, equity, or debt). From there, it’s about getting your offering documents in order and connecting with investors whose mandate aligns with your mission.
SVX supports you at every stage. We provide investment readiness assessments, and work one-on-one to develop your offering from feasibility through to close to facilitate the transaction. You can also get listed on the SVX Impact Index for free, putting your offering in front of hundreds of Canadian impact investors actively seeking opportunities.
How is investment capital different from grants?
Grants are non-repayable funding, usually awarded for a specific project or period, and often come with reporting requirements but no expectation of financial return. Investment capital is different: investors expect their money back, typically with a return, whether through interest, dividends, or an eventual exit. That comes with more obligation, but also more flexibility, larger amounts, and the ability to build a longer-term relationship with funders invested in your growth.
For many social purpose organizations, the two work together. SVX helps you understand which forms of capital fit your model, and how to structure an offering that’s both investable and true to your mission.
What do I need to launch and manage a fund or investment product?
Launching a fund requires a clear investment thesis, a defined structure and terms, a credible team and track record, regulatory compliance, and a plan for sourcing both capital and deals. Managing one adds ongoing needs: investor reporting, capital deployment, impact measurement, and back-office administration.
SVX provides fund design services to help you structure your fund, back-end fund management services to handle operations, and accelerator programs like WIN-VC, Towards, and Catalyst to build your capacity alongside a cohort of peers. Whether you’re launching your first product or scaling an existing one, we can meet you where you are.
